A history of innovation

Charles A. Zinkand – who went by Chaz – was a visionary entrepreneur who brought elegance, innovation, and a vibrant social experience to San Francisco’s dining scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the founder of the renowned Café Zinkand, he created a space where culture, cuisine, and community thrived, making it a cornerstone of the city’s golden era. His passion for excellence and forward-thinking spirit continue to inspire generations. Now, over a century later, his legacy lives on through Zincan, a company founded by his great-great-grandson and driven by the same principles of innovation, quality, and human connection—redefining the future with cutting-edge technology just as he redefined hospitality in his time.

Café Zinkand

From 1895 to 1905, Café Zinkand was one of San Francisco’s most celebrated dining establishments, located in the Emma Spreckels Building at Sutter and Powell Streets. Known for its elegant European-style cuisine, fresh seafood, and lively entertainment, the café attracted a distinguished clientele, including politicians, artists, and business elites. It was more than just a restaurant—it was a vibrant social hub where guests enjoyed live music, fine dining, and an atmosphere of sophistication. Café Zinkand embodied the energy of a rapidly growing San Francisco, thriving during the city’s golden era.
